SOUTH SUDAN
South Sudan, the world’s newest country, is also one of the world’s gravest crises. With Ugandan troops, Sudanese rebels and the government fighting over scarce resources, mainly oil, and the Dinka Ngok people fighting the cattle-hearding Arbs over land, there is an estimated 50,000 dead, 508,550 refugees and 1,251,050 internally displaced people living in refugee camps in the country. Because of the fighting, thousands of families missed the planting season and lost their livestock so they now have no income or food for their families. They have also suffered from severe droughts. Humanitarian organizations have estimated nearly 2.5 million people will face severe food shortages this year unless huge interventions are planned and executed.
